Lithology
Highly evolved calc-alkaline volcanics spanning basaltic andesite to rhyolite with strong LILE enrichment and high LILE/HFSE; includes the bimodal Western Volcanics and the Shamran and Drosh volcanics.
Synonyms

The Shamran Volcanic Group is an Eocene, post-suturing suite of highly evolved calc-alkaline volcanic rocks in Kohistan, including the Western Volcanics; it records mature Andean-type continental-margin volcanism during renewed extension (fore-arc collapse) at c. 58-40 Ma. On the revised map the formerly-'Chalt' Western Volcanics are reassigned to this group.

Band colour = period; texture = dominant rock type. Lines between bands mark the contact type; dotted = no contact recorded in the sources (not a claim of conformity). True scale makes height ∝ recorded thickness; hatched = thickness not recorded. Ages approximate, for ordering.

Remarks

Post-suturing Andean-type arc volcanism (c. 58-40 Ma); separated on the revised map from the older, pre-suturing Chalt Volcanic Group with which it had been mapped, and correlated with the Utror, Mankial and Drosh volcanics.

Age & correlation (1)

  • Petterson (2010): the Shamran (Shamran/Teru) Volcanic Group is a post-suturing, highly evolved calc-alkaline volcanic-sedimentary unit of the Kohistan arc, younger than the intra-oceanic Chalt Volcanic Group. Primary review source for the Shamran/Teru succession.
