The Kundalshahi Group (Salkhala Formation) is named after Kundalshahi village in the Neelam valley by Malik et al. (1996); it was originally proposed as the Kundalshahi formation by Ghazanfar and Chaudhry (1986). Those authors, extending their Kaghan mapping into the Neelam valley, recognized the Sharda group north of the MCT and a Neelam Valley group south of it (subdivided into the Tithwal and Kundalshahi formations). The Naril group (granulitic gneisses named after Naril village north of Kel by Malik et al. 1996) occurs in the same area.
