Synonyms
Hadda Formation

The lower formation of the Sharaban Group (Machh Super Group) in the Kirana Complex: a ~350 m calcareous quartzite of shallow-marine to deltaic character, overlain by the Chak 102 Conglomerate. Named the Hadda Quartzite (Heron, 1913); placed in the Sharaban Group by Alam (1987) and retained in the revised scheme of Chaudhry, Ahsan & Rehman (2022).

Band colour = period; texture = dominant rock type. Lines between bands mark the contact type; dotted = no contact recorded in the sources (not a claim of conformity). True scale makes height ∝ recorded thickness; hatched = thickness not recorded. Ages approximate, for ordering.

Name & nomenclature (1)

  • Attested in Shah (2009), Geological Survey of Pakistan Memoir 22 - the Stratigraphic Committee of Pakistan's compiled lexicon (listed in the memoir's contents). Adds the definitional GSP/SCP lexicon citation.

    Shah, S.M.I. (2009)

Age & correlation (1)

  • Kazmi & Jan (1997): the Hadda Formation is the fourth of the five formations of the Precambrian Kirana Group (Alam 1983; Kirana Hills; Rb-Sr 870 ± 40 Ma); no separate per-formation lithology is given (group lithology: phyllite, slate, quartzite and volcanics).

    Kazmi, A.H. & Jan, M.Q. (1997)

Lithology (1)

  • Chaudhry, Ahsan & Rehman (2022): the Hadda Quartzite is dull rusty-brown, fine-grained and calcareous, with minor conglomerate beds, interpreted as shallow-marine to deltaic. In their revised scheme it is the lower unit of the Sharaban Group (Machh Super Group), overlain by the Chak 102 Conglomerate.
