Geochemistry (trace-element) and petrography of the Warsak basic rocks (microgabbros, dolerites, metabasalts, volcaniclastics) associated with the Warsak alkaline granites ~30 km WNW of Peshawar. Interprets them as initial-rift-stage continental tholeiites of within-plate affinity (closer to rift volcanics than plateau basalts), part of a tholeiitic dyke/sill suite in the Lower Palaeozoic and older rocks of the northern Indian plate. Directly correlates the Warsak volcanic/volcaniclastic component with the Karapa Greenschist of the Ambela area and the amphibolite marker horizon of the upper Marghazar Formation of Lower Swat, all of Permo-Triassic 'Panjal' affinity (Panjal volcanics of Kaghan and Kashmir).

- Paleozoic Karapa Greenschist
- Geological significance: Tahirkheli, Khan & Mian (1993): the Warsak basic rocks near Peshawar (tholeiitic microgabbros, dolerites and metabasalts) are initial-rift-stage continental tholeiites of within-plate affinity, and their volcanic/volcaniclastic component is directly correlatable with the Karapa Greenschist of the Ambela area (and the amphibolite marker of the upper Marghazar Formation of Lower Swat) - all of Permo-Triassic 'Panjal' affinity, correlated with the Panjal volcanics of Kaghan and Kashmir. This supports a Permo-Triassic (Panjal rift) origin and age for the Karapa Greenschist, consistent with its bracketed age.

- Geological significance: Tahirkheli, Khan & Mian (1993): the amphibolite marker horizon in the upper part of the Marghazar Formation (Lower Swat) is correlated with the Warsak basic rocks and the Karapa Greenschist - i.e. with the Permo-Triassic Panjal volcanics - as part of an initial-rift-stage continental-tholeiite suite of the northern Indian plate margin.

- Geological significance: Tahirkheli, Khan & Mian (1993): the Warsak basic rocks near Peshawar are continental tholeiites of Permo-Triassic 'Panjal' affinity, extending the Panjal rift-volcanic province (widespread in the Zanskar and Pir Panjal ranges) into the Peshawar-Swat-Ambela region through correlatives such as the Karapa Greenschist and the Marghazar amphibolite marker horizon.
