Full text reviewed (reviewer-supplied extract). First robust age assignment for the Abbottabad succession of Hazara: Cambrian, on Hyolithes (Circotheca, Linevitus?) and the heteractinellid sponge Chancelloria from the glauconitic Hazira Member of the Tarnawai Formation at Salhad (confirmed by Seilacher, Gocht, Rushton). Succession: Hazara Group -> Tanol Formation (Eo-Cambrian) -> Abbottabad Group (Kakul Formation: Tanakki Conglomerate tillite, Sangargali, Mahmdagali, Mirpur members; then cherty/phosphatic Sirban dolomite) -> Tarnawai Formation (Galdanian + Hazira members). Uses 'Abbottabad Group' nomenclature later superseded by 'Abbottabad Formation' (Butt 1972). Sangargali correlated with the Lower Cambrian Khewra Sandstone (Salt Range) and Lalun Sandstone (Iran).

- Age: Latif (1974) established a Cambrian age for the Abbottabad succession of Hazara (which he had mapped in 1970 as the 'Abbottabad Group'), on Hyolithes (Circotheca, Linevitus?) and the heteractinellid sponge Chancelloria from the glauconitic Hazira Member of the overlying Tarnawai Formation at Salhad (identifications confirmed by A. Seilacher, H. Gocht and A.W.A. Rushton). This placed the whole sequence — Tanakki Conglomerate through the cherty, phosphatic Sirban dolomite — as pre-Upper Carboniferous (Cambrian), overturning the earlier post-Carboniferous age inferred from the glaciogenic Tanakki Conglomerate.
- Member units: In Latif's (1974) scheme the unit comprises the Kakul Formation (Tanakki Conglomerate tillite, Sangargali, Mahmdagali and Mirpur members) overlain by the Sirban cherty/phosphatic dolomite, resting on the Tanol Formation (Eo-Cambrian) and succeeded by the Tarnawai Formation (Galdanian + Hazira members). He used 'Group' rank; modern usage (Butt 1972) treats the succession as the Abbottabad Formation — the note is retained for the age and fossil evidence, not the rank.
- Geological significance: Latif (1974) correlated the Sangargali Member with the Lower Cambrian Khewra (Purple) Sandstone of the Salt Range and the Lalun Sandstone of Iran, and the post-Tanakki sequence with the Mila/Kalshaneh formations of Iran and the Krol-Shali succession of the Simla-Garhwal-Kumaon Himalaya and western Nepal.
