Molasse: the mountains shedding their weight
The Siwalik Group is molasse — the enormous wedge of river-laid sandstone, siltstone and mudstone shed off a rising mountain belt into the foreland in front of it. As the Himalaya grew, its rivers carried the debris south and dumped it across the Potwar Plateau and the sub-Himalayan ranges. The pile grew thousands of metres thick, and because deposition was more or less continuous, it recorded the passing fauna almost frame by frame.
Geologists divide the group into a succession of formations — the Kamlial, Chinji, Nagri, Dhok Pathan and, higher still, the Tatrot and Pinjor beds — each a slice of Miocene-to-Pleistocene time.
A dated archive, not just a fossil bed
What lifts the Siwaliks above an ordinary fossil site is that the sequence can be dated with unusual precision. The sandstones and mudstones carry a magnetic record of ancient reversals of Earth’s field, and matching that pattern to the global timescale pins the layers — and the fossils in them — to within a few hundred thousand years. Decades of work, notably the long-running collaboration between the Geological Survey of Pakistan and researchers from Harvard and Yale, turned the Potwar into a natural laboratory for studying how faunas change through time.
The cast of characters
The animals themselves are spectacular. The beds have yielded early elephants and their relatives — including the tusked Deinotherium and Stegodon — alongside rhinoceroses, hippos, giant tortoises, crocodiles, pigs, and a great diversity of antelopes and cattle relatives. Among the most striking are the giraffids, including the massive, ox-like Sivatherium.
One arrival is so consistent across Eurasia that geologists use it as a time marker: the three-toed horse Hipparion, which appears in the Siwaliks around 10.7 million years ago. Its sudden entry — the “Hipparion datum” — records a migration event and helps correlate the Potwar sequence with faunas as far away as Europe and China.
Sivapithecus and the ape story
The Siwaliks’ most famous fossils are the great apes. Sivapithecus, found mainly in the Chinji and Nagri formations, lived roughly 12.5 to 8.5 million years ago and shows facial features linking it to the orangutan lineage. It sits at the centre of long debates about the origins and geography of the great apes, and it makes the Potwar essential reading for anyone interested in our own extended family tree.
Reading environmental change
Because the record is both long and well dated, the Siwaliks also track the environment itself. Chemical signals in fossil teeth and soils show a shift, over the late Miocene, from wooded landscapes toward more open grasslands — one of the clearest regional records anywhere of the spread of grasses and the animals that fed on them. The Potwar does not just preserve creatures; it preserves a changing world.
